Least favorite glue/adhesive March 7, 2010 wb (Chicago, IL United States) I like to have solutions before I have problems and this glue has been more of a problem than a solution. I'm always up for another 'better' or more applicable solution for a specific handyman problem/project that arises, since I'm always fixing/improving/modifying something. But this glue has left me frustrated numerous times.
Can it create a strong bond? Yes. But it takes a very long time to cure (24 hours, and that's if the materials bonded are porous, longer if not, like smooth plastics, also slower if the temperature is cold like in a cool garage), requires a very good clamping in the meantime, is very brittle and not flexible (which can destroy the bond entirely), and expands leaving messy edges and/or uncertainty on proper area to apply glue. It's also difficult to clean up/off once you've realized its the wrong solution.
I'll stick to my epoxies, liquid nails/construction adhesive, super glues/gels, silicone, wood and other purposeful glues, even scotch tape for that matter, before I use this glue again (no pun intended.)
All dried up. Don't waste your money! February 16, 2010 M. Trunzo (Westen New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased a 4 oz. bottle at my local hardware chain store. I used it for two repairs at one sitting. It did not hold a slightly separated sole on a pair of sneakers. I thought this would be a simple job but the "gorilla" was more like a little pet monkey. However, the glue did work well in the other repair. I understand that no product is made to perform its best on all surfaces so I give it an average grade for performance since my admittedly limited experience yielded 50/50 results.
My problem lies in the extremely short shelf life. After just the one use described above, I sealed the bottle per the instructions by squeezing out all of the air before tightening the cap down. When I tried to use the bottle for another repair 2 months later, the entire contents had hardened. I called customer service and they told me I should repeat the same process of removing the air before tightly capping the bottle but this time, I should store the bottle upside down so that any possible hardening would remain at the bottom of the bottle and the useable glue would be accessible at the tip. Thinking this was a fluke, I bought another bottle but this time it was the 2 oz. size. It sat in the original box, upside down on my home office desk. When I needed it about 10 weeks later I opened it only to find another useless hardened mass. The factory seal had never even been broken yet Gorilla Glue had screwed me again.
I reluctantly give it even a one star rating. I don't care how good the glue MAY be if it dries up so fast that you only get one use per bottle or in the case of my 2nd attempt NO USE AT ALL? Unless you plan to use the entire contents (or at least a good portion of it) within a couple of weeks of purchasing it AND at one sitting, don't waste your money! I've already thrown out two bottles of Gorilla Glue and one was never even touched. I won't be buying a 3rd.
It might be strong but difficult to work with. February 5, 2010 S. A. ROBBINS (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gorilla glue might be very strong but it is not user friendly for woodworking. It has some major drawbacks. It is not water soluble so you cannot wipe the excess with a wet rag (I had to use lacquer thinner). It expands quite a bit which means even if you wipe the excess initially, you are still going to have it coming out of the joint. Don't even think about using it to glue anything without using clamps, as the expansion of the glue will cause the parts to move. The bottle cap is cheap and it broke at the bottle when I tried to pull off the cap (which of course glued itself to the nozzle).
I've gone back to conventional woodworking glues and the new ones (tite-bond) are very strong so there is no real advantage to Gorilla glue.
Lots of glue January 9, 2010 B. Figgins 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gorilla Glue is incredible. It'll hold almost anything.
The downside is, you only need a drop for most small repairs. This 4oz bottle is about 3.9 ounces too much.
Over Rated January 6, 2010 Deborah Whitaker (Klamath Falls, OR) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found Gorilla Glue to be way over rated. Everything that I've used it on eventually came apart. Even when I accidently took the capped off with my mouth (don't try this unless you're a professional), it didn't take long to get my lips unstuck. I'm glad that I just bought a small size of it.
