Product Description
Sometimes all you can do is fly away home . . .

When Sylvie Serfer met Richard Woodruff in law school, she had wild curls, wide hips, and lots of opinions. Decades later, Sylvie has remade herself as the ideal politician’s wife—her hair dyed and straightened, her hippie-chick wardrobe replaced by tailored knit suits. At fifty-seven, she ruefully acknowledges that her job is staying twenty pounds thinner than she was in her twenties and tending to her husband, the senator.

Lizzie, the Woodruffs’ younger daughter, is at twenty-four a recovering addict, whose mantra HALT (Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?) helps her keep her life under control. Still, trouble always seems to find her. Her older sister, Diana, an emergency room physician, has everything Lizzie failed to achieve—a husband, a young son, the perfect home—and yet she’s trapped in a loveless marriage. With temptation waiting in one of the ER’s exam rooms, she finds herself craving more.

After Richard’s extramarital affair makes headlines, the three women are drawn into the painful glare of the national spotlight. Once the press conference is over, each is forced to reconsider her life, who she is and who she is meant to be.

Written with an irresistible blend of heartbreak and hilarity, Fly Away Home is an unforgettable story of a mother and two daughters who after a lifetime of distance finally learn to find refuge in one another.

2 out of 5 stars This book won't make the Best Seller list!!   September 7, 2010
Durrell
I bought this book because there was such a great review in my local paper. What a waste of money this was for me along with my time. If you enjoy adult books then this one is up your alley! I was so surprised that I even finished this book. I can usually read a book in a day or two. This one took me almost two weeks to read. I was hoping that the trash in this book would end. I guess there should be ratings on books now too. If there was one I would say this book should receive a triple "X" rating.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!!   September 6, 2010

I started this book thinking I had wasted my money, but the more I read the more I got into it. I found it to be both inspiring and full of hope. It was nice to read a book without a perfect ending. Instead it showed the evolution and growth of each of the three main characters. I'm glad I read it.

4 out of 5 stars Like strong female characters?   September 3, 2010
Linda Rockhill
Fly Away Home is a beautifully written story of women who rise to the challenge of accepting and changing unpleasant truths about themselves. It's about the difficulties both private and public of being a member of a Senator's family as news of his affair with a much younger woman hit the news. The book is told from the perspective of the different family members, Sylvie, the Senator's wife and each of his two daughters. They are complex and flawed characters and through them Weiner touches on some emotional but timeless topics such as drug addiction, unplanned pregnancy, infidelity and marriage. One thing I enjoyed about this story is that each of these women, although different, is very strong. It's heartwarming to witness their inter relationships grow as each looks inward, confronts her inner conflicts and becomes a shade more true to herself. Although the plot slowed in spots, my main complaint is that although I got to know the characters, neither they nor the story stayed with me for any length of time. In short, fans of Jennifer Weiner and those looking for a light airport or beach read will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the biting sense of humor!   September 2, 2010
JULSIE (Woodbine, MD)
The wife of a politician finds out that her husband has had an affair. She leaves to begin a new life. We get an inside view of the wife and family's vantage point, the ones who were betrayed and shamed in public. I love the biting sense of humor!

Other good ones are LET'S TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME, EXPLOSION IN PARIS, COLD ROCK RIVER.

4 out of 5 stars Not Typical Jennifer Weiner But Really Enjoyed It   August 30, 2010
SimpleandPosh
I've been reading Jennifer Weiner since Good in Bed came out and I always reserve a copy of her books when they first come out. I agree with other people who say this is not a typical Weiner read but I think that's a great thing. After awhile the typical chick lit gets boring and I felt like these characters were more mature and dealt with issues more deeply than in older Weiner books. It's definitely heavier than a light chick lit novel but still thouroughly enjoyable.
